hippie style

May 28, 2008 at 3:28 am (Uncategorized) (, )

today we had a delicious, completely organic (I think) meal. We had some delicious hamburgers we made on our George Foreman grill (organic meat from the Fenske’s), whole grain buns, organic lettuce, organic strawberries, organic tomatoes, and organic lemonade. we bought most of it today, except for the meat, which was given to us, and it was nearly the same price as buying gross overprocessed food. I just read a horrifying article in Men’s Health about the differences between organic and regular meat, so now I’m all paranoid about that too. all in all, our dinner was totally awesome and delicious. no picture for today. we were too hungry to take a picture of anything before we ate it.

in totally unrelated posting news, I just found out that my computer has a second hard drive slot, so I’m super excited to buy my new 160 gig HDD when we get back from Indiana. I’ll get to reinstall Ubuntu with it’s own gigantic partition, plus we’ll actually have some room on our computer. Holla!

wake me up before you go-go, don’t leave me hangin’ on like a yo-yo

May 24, 2008 at 6:20 pm (Uncategorized) ()

Ah, what a beautiful morning. I woke up when Ben called me at 11:40 to see where I was at, as I was supposed to pick him up at some point this morning. No big deal though. So now I’m having breakfast (scrambled eggs, coffee, and milk) at 12:00 and enjoying the fact that I finally got my wireless to work on Ubuntu. This picture pretty much sums up my morning.

photo of the day

May 24, 2008 at 12:52 am (Uncategorized)

here’s your sweet picture for today. not nearly as good as I was hoping; the sun was down a little too far by the time I made it back over there. I’m starting to become overwhelmed with the size of this new patient tower that st. marry’s is building. that and the fact that only a couple months ago they were finishing the gigantic concrete towers.

ten months

May 23, 2008 at 4:10 am (Uncategorized) (, )

this past tuesday, the 20th, was our ten month anniversary (of marriage). we didn’t really remember until the evening, and we’re not really into celebrating that kind of thing. instead we decided to walk around downtown and take some pictures.

Mishaps

May 14, 2008 at 12:27 am (Uncategorized) (, )

So as it turns out, the lid to the pickle jar wasn’t quite on all the way. Normally this wouldn’t be a big deal, as we’re not really worried about the pickles escaping, but because our fridge is retarded, we have to store our pickle jar sideways. Apparently there’s been a small leak going since we used the pickles for dinner yesterday, and I had the pleasure of discovering it when I decided that pickles sounded wonderful on my George Foreman cooked bison burger. This is the very strange smelling mess I had to clean up. Always remember, kids, put that lid on tyte.

New Camera

May 12, 2008 at 5:41 am (Uncategorized) (, , )

So I’m really enjoying our new camera. I’ve taken roughly a bizillion picture with it since we lost and then found the compact flash card we ordered with it, and I’m slowly improving my visual jedi skills. It turns out that taking nice pictures with a nice camera is a lot harder than taking decent pictures with a decent camera. There’s all this focusing, aperture, ISO, and lots of other features I’m talking about to make myself feel important. Someday I hope to understand what they mean. Anyway, this is probably one of my favorite pictures so far, and if I ever get some more upload space on flickr, I’ll link to some more.

Non-conventional students

May 7, 2008 at 6:08 pm (Uncategorized) ()

It always makes me wonder, who are these thirty-something people who suddenly feel the need to return to college to get a degree? We have lots of them here at Mesa, and they’re not just taking night classes. Many of these people have suddenly become full-time students, taking classes during the day, and working…. some other time? What makes it even better is that they seem to be infected with the mindset that, “Hey guys! I’m in college too, so we’re all cool right? I mean, it’s cool if I try to dress and act like you, even though I graduated high school fifteen years ago, right?” Right now, as I type, there is a man wearing the most ridiculous plaid shorts I’ve ever seen. These shorts would not be out of the ordinary if he was around 20, but as he’s probably much closer to 35, it seems a little out of place.

But why should I care? They’re just trying to better themselves, who am I to say that they shouldn’t?

It wouldn’t bother me, but it seems like they’ve garnered all of their knowledge about what college should be from watching Animal House. Not only that, but they are BY FAR the most annoying group of people in any class, and especially in the library. In fact, the group of four sitting at the table across from me right now are the entire inspiration for this post. They are the second group so far today to talk obnoxiously loudly, as well as carry on cell phone conversations that make it seem as though they’re trying to simulate what it would be like to talk with someone while at a Metallica concert. Also, one of them has the noisiest bag of Burger King food I’ve ever heard. Yea that they wouldest be smitten from on high!

I feel better now.

Forgotten Canyon

May 6, 2008 at 3:50 am (Uncategorized)

Canyoneering. It’s kind of like hiking, except you do it inside of a canyon. Sounds pretty simple, right? Well canyoneering is what I did this past weekend. My dad was in town for the weekend specifically for this trip, and we had been planning on it for a while. We did Forgotten Canyon, one he had done once before. There’s no “trail” on this hike, you just following the topographical map you find from your favorite outdoor website. It starts pretty steep as you walk down quite a ways before you get to a relatively short rapel. After that you get to walk for a couple of hours through the sand wash before the canyon deepens again and you arive at the second rapel. This one is more fun since it’s a little bigger and free hanging. After all this there’s just lots and lots and lots of walking. Overall the trip took around nine hours, covered LOTS of vertical feet, and caused much pain to all. In face, I don’t think I’ve ever been so sore, especially not just from walking. Overall, very fun, but not for the faint of heart.

Once I’ve got some pictures uploaded to flickr I’ll add a link. For now, here’s one that’s kinda neat.

Ubuntu and lolcats

May 1, 2008 at 9:53 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

Whether you realize it or not, what you’re reading has been typed from the only Ubuntu boot I’ve ever used. I downloaded it on yesterday, and as I don’t really have much extra room (meaning none at all) on my hard drive, I’ve only been using it off of the CD. It’s very nice of them to let you run it without actually having to install anything, by the way. So far it’s been pretty slick. Now, since Scott is the entire reason I’m writing anything today, I’m going to use one of his little blogging tricklets.

Interesting points about Ubuntu

  • Very fast, considering how much is run from a CD
  • So far, no wireless internet. Kind of annoyed over the lack of help it gives you there
  • Comes with Firefox and OpenOffice installed, although it’s not the Firefox 3 beta, which would be even better.
  • Also has GIMP installed. Apparently when you go a little open source, you go all the way.

I’m not 100% decided at the moment, but if I can clear up a little hard drive space, I may switch to using Ubuntu on a semi-regular basis. As an interesting side note, my partner for my video game design class is such a hardcore Linux user that he made fun of me for using Ubuntu because it’s still too Windows like. I thought I was doing good just going this far…. apparently not. He claims Fedora is the way to go, so maybe that’ll be next week. Anyway, enough geeky talk. BEHOLD! LOLCATS!
